Since the very beginning of arrival of IDPs, in 1999, thanking to the support of “Sima A. Igumanov” homeland association of citizens of Prizren and neighbouring settlements the associates of “Sveti Spas” association were providing assistance to their fellow-citizens which had been necessary in overcoming of the current situation. Very soon, the association created extensive database on overall beneficiaries in electronic form.
Officially, “Sveti Spas” association was registered as independent association on 17 January 2001 in Federal Ministry of Justice by it's decision no. 3/1-80/2-2001-07.
The founders of Citizens’ Association for Assistance to Internally Displaced Persons from Kosovo and Metohija are displaced persons from Prizren, so the proposal was that the name reminded of hometown - Prizren. In consultations with representatives of homeland association, after discussing many proposals, the association was given the name of Sveti Spas church, built in 1335. The church dominates over the town thanking to its position on the slopes of hill.
Today the association has 8000 families with 20000 individuals in the territory of Belgrade town and approximately the same number of beneficiaries in overall territory of Serbia (Pirot, Nis, Kraljevo, Kragujevac, Cacak, Smederevo, Lapovo, Krusevac, Vrnjacka Banja, Arandjelovac, Svilajnac, Aleksinac, Kladovo). The association used to have an office in Nis, which was closed at the end of 2003 due to the opening of a number of other offices, and mobile teams in other towns. Thanking to the project of network of legal offices IOCC-BPRM the association opened in 2003 own office in Prizren which is currently functioning in village of Sredska due to the practical and security reasons. The process of observing the possibilities for opening new offices is continuing.
The association is capable to meet all it's demands in the network of offices organised as the network of association members. The network is result of activities organised by IOCC and CRS aimed at strengthening of capacities of local NGO (Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Nis, Smederevska Palanka).
The beneficiaries of services of association are the IDPs and refugees: Serbs, Montenegrins, Albanians, Turks, Muslims, Roma and others.
